Aquila Private Game Reserve is very proud to be a reserve in the Western Cape to have reintroduced lion, rhino, buffalo and now finally the elephant which form part of the African Big 5.

Aquila has several safari options on offer. These enable our guests to experience the reserve in a way that
Aquila has Lion as well as free roaming Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino which form part of the African Big 5. The reserve is also home to Giraffe and Hippo. Large herds of game are found on the Reserve such as Black Wildebeest, Burchell's Zebra, Springbok, Gemsbok, Steenbok, Caracal (lynx), Blesbok, Bat Eared Fox, Ostriches, Klip Springer, Duiker, Greybuck, Baboon, Black Backed Jackal, Eland, Red Hartebeest.
In another of our conservation efforts, we currently offer our visitors a complimentary educational introduction to our cheetahs, highlighting the plight of the free ranging cheetah and their critically diminishing numbers. It is important to note that our cheetahs were captive bred and not ‘born free’ nor do they form part of Aquila’s game drive and the experience is strictly controlled and in the interest of cheetah survival worldwide. Guests however are not allowed to directly interact with the cheetahs but are given a comprehensive talk on the plight of these beautiful cats.
Birdlife
Aquila is home to 172 species of birds and is also home to several breeding pairs of the rare and endangered Black Eagle, after which the Reserve has been named. Karoo chat, rufous-eared warbler, fairy flycatcher and yellow-bellied eremomela can be found on short walks into the surrounding wilderness. Lark-like Bunting and Black-headed Canary move in after rain. In the summer months the Booted Eagle is a regular visitor and the rainy season attracts Flamingo's to the Reserve

A quad bike Safari can be included in one of our other safaris. Minimum age requirement is

FAMILY LUXURY CHALETS OVERNIGHT SAFARI
Luxury Family Units:These units are semi detached with attention paid to privacy. Units are equipped with mini bars, tea and coffee making facilities and feature indoor fireplaces for that extra bit of warmth and cosiness in the colder months. They are under thatch and feature exterior stone work using raw materials from the area. The large en-suite bathrooms feature corner baths with outdoor showers.
First Rhino Born at Aquila
27 February 2005 saw the first rhino born at the 4-star Aquila Private Game Reserve which is located aproximiately 2 hours from Cape Town on scenic drive via the N1, via the scenic Du Toitskloof Pass and endless beautiful winelands. The expected time of the birth was around lunch time and the calf was in good health.
Facilities at the Aquila Game Reserve
Restaurant - Built from natural materials found on the reserve such as rocks, river pebbles, reeds, wood and thatch to blend with the surrounding environment, this spacious, high ceilinged, African character building with large fireplaces is the perfect setting for the superb buffet meals served. Meals are prepared by an internationally acclaimed chef and traditional meals are offered as well as the standard fare. Catering for special dietary requirements is provided. The restaurant can seat up to approximately 300 people.
Pool Bar and Main Swimming Pool - Situated off the swimming pool and next to the restaurant this “African” styled bar seats approximately 20 guests overlooking the pool area. The new saltwater pool has a length of 35 meters and with rock finishes is made good use of in the summer months.
She may not be classified as one of Africa’s Big Five, but formidable former British prime minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher, certainly provided a rare and exciting sighting with her visit to Aquila.
The great dame and her modest party of an escort and obligatory body guards chose to explore the Aqulia Private Game Reserve, which is located aproximiately 2 hours from Cape Town on scenic drive via the N1 travel via the scenic Du Toitskloof Pass and endless winelands.

Aquila Game Reserve Map and Directions:
Follow the N1 highway from Cape Town for approximately 130km. The road will take you past Paarl, through the Huguenot toll road, past Worcester, De Doorns and through the Hex River Valley. Approximately 30 km after De Doorns and just passed the road sign indicating “10km to Touws River” , you will get to the R46 turnoff to Ceres. Take the turnoff to the left. Follow the road for approximately 3km. You will find the Aquila Private Game Reserve main entrance on your left hand side.
